Brief Review
I’ll remember Black Widow more for being back in a movie theater than I will for the movie itself. As for the actual movie, it is a totally fine entry in the Marvel universe yet it is also standalone enough that you can enjoy it without having watched the rest. I’d call it a less intense, funnier and female version of a Jason Bourne movie. Black Widow is everything you would expect from a typical Marvel movie. It just doesn’t have anything that makes it unique from the rest. There’s some good action, there is some humor, and there are some touching emotional moments. If you’re looking for an action movie, and enjoy MCU style movies, this is definitely worth a watch. You will enjoy it while it is on, but it probably won’t be super memorable afterwards. Personally, I wish they took more risks. I didn’t think the humor worked that well and I wish they made this a pure spy movie. Another thing that bugged me is that I felt like this movie should have either been made many years ago (would have made more sense after Scarlett Johansson’s introduction to the MCU), or in a few years as final remembrance to the character. In the grand scheme of the MCU, it doesn’t make sense coming out now. Overall, this is exactly what you would expect from a modern day superhero movie and while there’s nothing special, Black Widow is enjoyable enough. More than anything though, it was nice to be back in a movie theater.
