Brief Review
First off, this is a taping of a live show of the famous Broadway musical featuring the original cast, not a recreated movie. The play is based on a biography of Alexander Hamilton and covers his entire life. I am not a huge fan of plays, but I don’t hate them either. So with that said, I actually did really enjoy this. The style takes some getting used to because it is primarily rapped as opposed to sung, however once you get passed that, this really is special. The music is easily the best part. It’s just a very good soundtrack with a ton of catchy songs. Beyond the music, I thought they chose a lot of interesting ways to tell the story through the music. The one thing keeping this from being absolutely amazing for me is that I found the story a little hard to follow. It covers Hamilton’s entire life and there is just a lot that happens throughout the play. With it being a play, it can’t cover the same level of detail as a traditional movie could. I feel like I need to watch it again to really grasp it. Now to be fair, I don’t think the story is what makes the play so special. The music is what makes this special, so it is kind of a minor gripe. Overall Hamilton is definitely worth watching solely based on the cultural phenomenon it is. Outside of that, you get to see a good play and listen to some really good music. While it would definitely have been more impactful seeing it live on Broadway, I was definitely a fan of the filmed version.
