Brief Review
Onward is about two elf brothers, one slacker and one goody-two shoes, who go on an adventure in order to spend one last day with their father who died when they were young. It’s kind of ironic, for a movie about magic, Onward lacked the typical Pixar magic. I did enjoy it, but it isn’t up to Pixar’s generally excellent standard. First, some of the positives. The concept of a “modern” world filled with fantasy creatures who have all lost their magic is interesting, quirky and unique. Then, like all Pixar movies, it is beautifully animated. Finally, the story between the two brothers is very good and totally carries the movie. It’s a very heartfelt message about family and appreciating what you have. Onward really nails the emotional elements. It is a real tear-jerker at times. I may have teared up in the theater… On the other hand, it kind of misses the mark on other aspects. The movie isn’t as funny as I thought it would be and the overall plot is just kind of fine. The adventure and action elements are fine, but really nothing special. So while I am a total sucker for Pixar movies, I recognize that this definitely isn’t their best. I did enjoy the movie, and would watch it again, but Onward definitely left me with a feeling of lost opportunity. It is decent and enjoyable, but it could have been so much more.
