Brief Review
Sonic the Hedgehog is based on the classic video game and follows Sonic and his new friend on Earth as they save Sonic from Dr. Robotnik. Honestly this movie was much better than expected. Not to imply that this movie was good, but it was totally watchable. Watchable might sound like a really low bar, because it is, but please just watch the original trailer. When I saw that trailer I thought this movie was going to be a total disaster. Just look at how creepy Sonic looks! And then on top of it, the backlash over Sonic was so great that they delayed the movie and reanimated him. That’s when I was convinced this movie was totally a lost cause. However, they pulled off a miracle and not only fixed the look of Sonic (here is the new trailer) but made a watchable movie. So kudos to them for recognizing they messed up and fixing it, and a huge round of applause to those new animators. Now for the actual movie. Like I said, its watchable. Not bad but definitely not great. My biggest takeaway is that it was kind of cheesy. It definitely tries to cater to the fans of Sonic video games with a bunch of references but it really is more geared towards a younger audience. The dialogue, the jokes and the action are all a bit cheesy, but again it is fine. I probably chuckled a couple of times and I wasn’t ever bored or rolling my eyes. Jim Carrey was pretty much perfect for the villain. It allows him to be his goofy and overly-animated self. Overall, the movie definitely gets bonus points for being nostalgic and even more so for simply not being an absolute disaster. However, in the end, Sonic the Hedgehog is a fairly cheesy movie geared towards kids. I don’t know if I would watch it again, but it’s watchable.
