Brief Review
After breaking up with the Joker, Harley Quinn is no longer off-limits to those she has wronged over the years. I had a whirlwind of emotions before I even saw Birds of Prey. When I first heard it was being made, I was excited because I really liked Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (although I was very disappointed by Suicide Squad). Then I saw the trailer and my excitement faded. Then some great reviews rolled in and I was suddenly excited again. Excited, I went to go see the movie on opening night and ugh… disappointment. This is just your typical DC movie. There are some good moments, but it just isn’t as good as the Marvel movies. DC just hasn’t figured it out yet. This movie totally lacks anything that makes it special. It can be fun at times and it is kind of wild and ridiculous, but it felt very familiar. I felt like I had basically seen it before. Then it hit me. Birds of Prey is literally Deadpool 2, except with a female lead and not as good. The story is almost identical. It is also the same ridiculous, over-the-top style, but it doesn’t quite push it far enough like the Deadpool movies do and ends up being less fun and less funny. I don’t know, I guess it is fine to watch, it just isn’t that good. I would much rather watch the Deadpool movies.
Oh and what is up with that title? Bird of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). I mean the title actually does sum up the movie pretty well, it’s totally ludicrous.
