Brief Review
Miss Americana is a documentary about Taylor Swift and her evolution throughout her career. Firstly, full disclaimer, I’m a big fan of Taylor Swift’s music. However being impartial, I think Miss Americana is a pretty solid documentary. It’s a combination of her ups and downs, her personal life, and her music making process. It also faces her multiple controversies head-on. The focus is really on her evolution from young teenage girl launched into stardom, into an adult woman in control of her own career. At times it tries to paint her as a victim which feels forced, but at other times she definitely was a victim. However, you can feel how hard it would have been to grow up in the spotlight. One of the best parts of the movie is the emotional nature and her sense of loneliness. I get it can be hard to sympathize with someone as famous and rich as her, but this was a pretty raw and emotional look into her life and struggles with stardom. My favorite scenes were definitely watching Taylor’s music creation process. It was honestly amazing to see how from even pretty early on in her songwriting, she already has a melody and sound to go along with the song and just how similar the final song is to her first attempts. Even if you aren’t a fan of Taylor Swift, I think this is a good watch about a phenomenal musical talent who has impacted a generation. She is also a genuinely good person. Overall this is a pretty solid documentary.
