Brief Review
An American businessman in England is looking to sell his underground marijuana empire when word of a potential sale gets out. This is kind of a tough one for me. By the end I liked it, but it took a while for me to come around to it. I either didn’t understand what was going on in the beginning or it was just moving too slowly and wasn’t well enough explained. Halfway through, I didn’t really like this movie. However once I figured out what was actually going on, I started to really enjoy it. Like I said, by the end I liked it and I would probably watch it again. Either way, I definitely did not have the right expectations going in. I thought this was going to be a hardcore gangster movie. Instead The Gentlemen plays almost like a mystery with constant plot twists and is kind of similar to Knives Out. It is also similar in that it is done in the same over-the-top style, except The Gentlemen is much more raunchy and explicit. It’s definitely not a family movie and not one that my grandma would enjoy. It is an entertaining movie, but you have to be able to enjoy both raunchy comedy and gangster movies at the same time. That’s what this is, like a gangster crime comedy. It’s an interesting blend. The definite high point is the acting. The cast just has a chemistry to it that works very well. Overall I think this was a pretty good movie, but it definitely isn’t for everyone.
