Brief Review
Based on the classic book, Little Women is a coming-of-age story of four sisters all trying to make their own way as women in the Civil War Era United States. I didn’t even know there was a book so I basically knew nothing about this movie before I saw it. I read the plot summary which left me jaded with low expectations thinking it would be in your face feminism. However my jaded view was unwarranted. I’m very glad I saw Little Women. It was a very pleasant surprise and I really enjoyed it. There is a bit of a feminist slant, but that was the point of the book and it is not trying to push a message at all. Most of the movie was basically really good. The plot was engaging and interesting, but maybe a touch long. It was funny, it was sad, it was charming and it just really allowed you to connect emotionally to it. I left the movie feeling warm and happy, so very few complaints from me. The acting was basically great across the board and Saoirse Ronan was amazing as the lead. This is the second movie that I thought she did a phenomenal job in (Lady Bird). My only knock on this movie is that it is a more indie/artsy which isn’t usually my cup of tea. However given that I liked it as much as I did despite it being artsy, I think a lot of people would enjoy it. Definitely worth watching.
