Brief Review
A New York City jeweler gets caught up in the world of high stakes gambling. Uncut Gems has a lot of potential and has some really good moments, but in the end doesn’t live up to its potential. This is not your typical Adam Sandler movie at all. It is a very tense and dramatic movie, but he does a great job in it. He is actually probably the high point of the entire movie. On the other hand, the plot takes too long to get going, but once the movie finds its groove, it is pretty good. Unfortunately the beginning is just too repetitive and convoluted and holds the movie back. I kept wondering if there was going to be a big turn in the plot or if it was as straightforward as it seemed. However once it gets going, the best way to describe the movie is frantic. It feels very chaotic and moves very quickly which makes the movie very tense, but it kind of works and makes sense with the plot. The soundtrack was also basically designed to keep you in a constant state of anxiety and then with the tense plot, leaves you on edge most of the movie. This was cool but at the same time it was emotionally exhausting. Ultimately I did enjoy Uncut Gems but it left some potential on the table. I would watch it again and I think it is worth watching at least once.
