Brief Review
Based on a true story, Ford hires car designer Carroll Shelby to build a race car to beat Ferrari at 24 Hours of Le Mans. While it definitely helps to be a fan of cars to enjoy this movie, it’s not necessary. Ford v Ferrari is just a good movie overall. Now if you are a car fanatic, you will love this movie because it definitely gets into details at times. For the rest of us average car drivers, there are a lot of other things to like. First off, the race scenes are very well done and really cool to watch. They were definitely the high points of the movie. Secondly, Matt Damon and Christian Bale work perfectly together. The acting is another strong point of the movie. Thirdly, behind the main story of competing with Ferrari, there are stories about friendship, dealing with corporate America, and following your passion. I actually think these sub-plots are more interesting than the main plot against Ferrari. Finally, Ford v Ferrari really does a good job of balancing the action of the racing scenes with the drama of the friendships and the corporate drama. My one complaint with this movie is that it is 2.5 hours long and the first full hour can be pretty slow and boring. I was honestly wondering what I got myself into for about an hour. If that part had moved faster, or had been done differently, I think I would have absolutely loved this movie. Overall, this is a very solid movie once you get past the slow beginning.
