Brief Review
A young woman accustomed to making bad decisions meets a mysterious guy who changes her life for the better. I didn’t really have any expectations for Last Christmas, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Maybe it gets a couple bonus points for being a holiday themed movie, but in my opinion it is one of the better rom-coms I’ve seen. At its heart it is still a romantic comedy, but it is about the least sappy one you could imagine. Instead of the movie feeling happy and bubbly, much of it actually feels downtrodden. If you’re looking for a typical lovey dovey romantic comedy, this isn’t really it. Emilia Clarke plays a negative woman who is a walking disaster of one bad decision after another. She actually isn’t a very likeable character in the beginning which makes it interesting. On the other hand, Henry Golding (from Crazy Rich Asians) is incredibly charming and likable throughout. The two of them have great chemistry and make the movie fun and enjoyable. Sure there are some clichés, but I thought it was a refreshing take on the genre. The plot was surprisingly good and not solely focused on a love story. There was even a twist that I actually didn’t see coming which I enjoyed. It falls a little short of being great, but there wasn’t a lot that I didn’t like about this movie honestly. Overall I really enjoyed Last Christmas in general and it is one of the better rom-coms in my opinion.
