Brief Review
A sequel to the unique retelling of Snow White. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil picks up after the original and continues to develop the relationship between Princess Aurora and her adoptive mother Maleficent. This one continues the darker tone that was established in the first one, but unfortunately is even more confused as to who the audience is. I’m not sure who the target audience is. It doesn’t feel like a movie for children (there’s basically a war in it), but at the same time it is kind of an odd concept for anyone older than mid-teenage years. So it just feels kind of lost. Now both the best and worst part of the movie was that the original had covered the main Snow White plot-lines, so this was free to be totally original and unique. It was definitely an original and unique story, I’m just not sure it was the right story. The movie starts off as expected and was interesting, but practically turns into a war movie. It wasn’t bad, just very far away from what I had expected. Overall I would put it roughly on-par with the first one, maybe slightly worse. It definitely didn’t need to be made, but on the same token it doesn’t ruin the first one in anyway. Not sure I would watch it again though. I wouldn’t really recommend this as much of a family movie, younger kids might actually be scared at points. It’s more of a movie for a young teen audience.
