Brief Review
Three seventh graders are invited to their first middle school party and want to learn how to kiss a girl before they go. I was hoping that Good Boys was going to be a classic R-rated comedy akin to Superbad (one of my favorite raunchy comedies). Unfortunately, I got my hopes up too much. This movie was definitely funny and I enjoyed watching it, but it doesn’t come anywhere near the instant classic category. So unfortunately, I left feeling a little disappointed. The vast majority of the jokes center on the fact that the characters are 7th graders and totally naïve to everything they come across. While this definitely makes for some funny moments, I kept feeling like the movie should have been funnier. However, the movie does a decent job of telling a story and developing the characters outside of the raunchy humor. I still think the premise of Good Boys is very funny and the movie executes fairly well. For some reason it just wasn’t amazing. As negative and disappointed as this review might sound, I want to stress that this really was a pretty funny movie and that I would definitely watch it again. I would call it funny, but not hilarious. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but I didn’t love it like I thought I would.
