Brief Review
A live-action remake of the classic animated Disney movie in which a kindhearted street thief finds a genie in a magic lamp and uses his three wishes to help him win over the princess. Maybe I’m biased because the original Aladdin was a favorite of mine as a kid, but I really enjoyed it. Don’t listen to the critics on this one, they’re wrong. No, it doesn’t quite live up to the original, but that is the only real complaint with it. I would say it just falls short of the magic the original had. The movie was funny, the music numbers are high energy, the new songs are enjoyable, the plot is pretty faithful to the original, and the actors are really fitting for their roles. The movie is a high energy and fun spectacle. Not much for me to complain about. Both Aladdin and Jasmine are very well cast and pretty much perfect for their roles (she can really sing and he can really dance). And while no one was ever going to outdo Robin Williams as the Genie, Will Smith does a great job of making the role his own. Overall I thought this movie was very well done and my only real knock was that it just misses being top notch like the original. If it wasn’t compared to the original, I think this would itself be a classic.
