Brief Review
A talented but unconventional and free-spirited writer is hired by his overachieving former babysitter as she prepares for her Presidential bid. While Long Shot falls short of being hilarious, I definitely enjoyed watching it. At its core, it is a fairly typical rom-com, except it has Seth Rogen, so it is slightly raunchier. Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen play the polar opposite characters so there are some obvious mishaps that happen, but they work in this movie. Think of this movie first as a comedy and then as a rom-com. Neither genre really lends itself to an amazing plot. Long Shot has a pretty simple story and really just serves for comedic purposes, but it is also a fairly endearing rom-com as well. I will say that the movie doesn’t even try to hide its political undertones at all. Honestly, at times it was a bit much for me, but definitely not enough to ruin the movie. I think if it had been more subtle at times it would have made the movie better overall, but they clearly are targeting a more specific audience. Overall, this is a pretty solid, lighthearted movie that is good for a few laughs if you aren’t turned off by its political nature. This would be perfect for a couple who both have a good sense of humor.
