Brief Review
A 14 year old foster boy gains the ability to turn into an adult superhero at will. I really like what they tried to do, but they didn’t do it as well as they could have. Shazam goes for a younger and more lighthearted (except one scene) feel than the majority of superhero movies. Had they done it really well, it would have been a really refreshing superhero movie because the premise is fairly original. However, the movie is really inconsistent. The humor only works half of the time and the other half it feels overly cheesy. Most of the time it feels lighthearted, except the one scene which I’ll mention again because it was so different from the rest of the movie. Probably the best parts of the movie were around the foster family, but they only inconsistently touch on this. On the other hand, the villain was very generic (I don’t even know his name) and at times the movie was overly cheesy and cliche. I don’t mind movies being a little cheesy, but there are scenes that I was cringing at because they felt so forced. So while I didn’t love Shazam, I actually would be interested in a sequel because I see the promise. You won’t hate it, but there are better superhero movies out there.
PSA: My view of this movie could be slightly biased because the lady next to me kept exclaiming/reacting out loud during the movie. So for anyone reading, don’t be that person.
