Brief Review
An intergalactic warrior fights to save Earth from an alien war, while also uncovering her forgotten past. This movie is a classic tale of expectations. By itself, it is a totally fine superhero movie. Unfortunately it is a Marvel movie and gets compared to some really really good superhero movies, which is admittedly unfair. Not a Marvel movie, but the obvious comparison here is Wonder Woman and I think that’s a good comparison. While I actually preferred the character of Wonder Woman to Captain Marvel (I did really enjoy Samuel L. Jackson’s character in this), this overall feels like a higher quality movie, so I give this a slight edge. My main problem with Captain Marvel is that outside of being led by a female, there’s nothing really exceptional about it. If this was led by a male, it would be a fine superhero movie, but that’s it. The story doesn’t have anything new, the villains aren’t very notable and it just doesn’t have many standout scenes. It also suffers from what I call the “Superman effect,” where she is so powerful that it hardly ever feels like she’s vulnerable. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in superhero movies. On the positive side, this is still an entertaining superhero movie with some decent action and humor. Despite not being one of Marvel’s best, it is still a good superhero movie and definitely worth a watch. It just isn’t one of the most memorable superhero movies.
