Brief Review
American Animals is based on a real life heist in which four college students try to steal one of the most expensive books in the world. It is filmed as half drama and half documentary. Actors recreate the heist while interviews from the original four members are interspersed throughout. American Animals is constantly half mocking the ridiculousness of the heist, but is also a serious movie, similar to I, Tonya. The movie itself was interesting enough, but seeing the commentary from the original members definitely made it better. Ultimately, it gets most of its intrigue from being a true story. As a standalone movie, it checks all the boxes, but fails to get you really engaged in it. Overall, it was a good watch because of the uniqueness of it, but it fails to be a really good movie.
