Brief Review
Eighth Grade is a realistic look at the pressures of a young teenager in the age of social media. It is kind of like Lady Bird for middle school students. However, this is not made for middle school students, it is more made for the parents. This movie got really good reviews from critics and I understand why, but I wouldn’t say this movie is great per se. Look, middle school is a weird time for everyone and this movie is really just showcasing that. It was interesting, however it isn’t a movie you will necessarily want to watch again. The realism of the movie is really what makes it stand out. It can be painfully awkward at times. Multiple times I found myself cringing at what was happening, but that is really the point of the movie. The point is to feel like your back in those awkward tween years. Thinking back on my middle school years, I remember what a weird period it is. Heck, I can imagine myself having similar experiences. Eighth Grade then goes a little further and showcases the unique pressure that teenagers, particularly females, face growing up today. At times it almost seemed overly exaggerated, but I really do think a lot of the situations were exactly what a lot of teenagers go through today. Overall, Eighth Grade was an interesting watch to see the unique pressures of growing up today, but I wouldn’t say it was a “good” movie. I enjoyed Lady Bird more.
