Brief Review
Upgrade is about a blue-collar worker who is left behind in the age of technology, only to get a computer chip implanted into his brain to hunt down his wife’s killers. Throughout the entire movie I couldn’t help but to think that I had basically seen this movie before. It was very similar to RoboCop with a hint of Elysium and I, Robot mixed in. It really added nothing new to these movies. I am typically a fan of pure action movies, but this was downright boring for the most part. The action scenes were good and there was some ironic humor, but the plot was awful. There were long periods where very little happened and the movie felt like it crawled. It has a lot of really cool pieces that could have been explored, especially the futuristic setting, but it chose not to. The further into the movie, the more it feels rushed and eventually the plot makes one too many twists. By the end, I couldn’t help but to think of how much better it should have been. Overall, it ends up feeling very forced and almost like an unfinished product. Critics really let me down on this one. This was a very long hour and a half. Skip it.
