Brief Review
In the year 2045, Earth has become a run down and depressing place. In order to escape the dreary reality, people spend much of their time in a virtual reality world called OASIS. After the founder of OASIS dies, people compete within the game for control. Ready Player One is a unique take on the action genre because much of the movie takes place in a virtual reality world, which means the heroes are a group of nerdy teenagers. This allows the movie to be an underdog story while also exploring how fantasy plays a role in our life and how technology continues to affect our lives, among other various relevant life lesson. Where Ready Player One really excels is in its visual effects. Because it is set inside of a video game, most of the movie is CGI, but it is all done exceptionally well and really feels like you’re truly watching an ultra-realistic video game. The movie contains tons of pop culture references from the 80’s and 90’s which makes it that much more fun. The movie isn’t without flaws, mainly a lack of background knowledge and some pacing issues. All in all, this is a solid film that is definitely an enjoyable watch. People who really enjoy video games will like it that much more.
