Brief Review
I, Tonya is based on one of the most unique American sports figures in history, Olympic skater Tonya Harding. The movie is less about the actual “incident” and more of a dark comedy about her life. Beginning from a very young age, I, Tonya depicts Harding’s tumultuous relationship with her mom, her abusive relationship with her ex-husband, and her struggle to be accepted by the figure skating community. Having not lived through the actual incident with Nancy Kerrigan, I did not really have an opinion of Tonya Harding before this. However, I left the movie feeling almost sorry for her. At the very least, I was sympathetic of how hard her life had been. This movie is a darker comedy, which really works due the almost absurd nature of the subject matter. It feels like an exaggerated retelling of the events, but that’s just due to the uniqueness of the situation. Margot Robbie delivers a very strong performance as Tonya Harding and really drives this movie. Everyone in the supporting cast all play their roles very well. This movie is just very interesting and intriguing to watch and really highlights the preposterous nature surrounding the infamous Tonya Harding.
