Brief Review
Molly’s Game is based on a memoir written by Molly Bloom, a former potential Olympic skier turned high stakes poker host. The movie shows Molly’s unlikely rise to the Olympic trials after an early injury, only to have her Olympic dreams crushed in an instant. Once her skiing career came to an end, Molly stumbles into the world of high stakes gambling and quickly rises to host some of the most exclusive poker games in the country. Following her rise, Molly’s past haunts her and leads her to develop self-destructive habits, which ultimately lead to her arrest by the FBI. Molly’s Game also intertwines multiple sub plots which help to develop the complex persona of Molly. Jessica Chastain does an excellent job portraying a strong and witty, yet troubled Molly Bloom. While Idris Elba also delivers a strong performance as her legal counsel. Not an overly glorified adaptation like “The Wolf of Wall Street”, Molly’s Game paints a much more realistic picture of the rise and fall of someone living the high life.
