Brief Review
Downsizing takes an interesting idea that could have been a great movie in many different genres and doesn’t deliver on any of the genres. Originally looking similar to an adult version of “Honey I Shrunk The Kids”, Downsizing doesn’t deliver. It is constantly stuck between genres, not quite sure if it is a comedy or a drama, and doing neither of them well. It is also carries an R-rating and for being an R-rated movie, they don’t use that to its ability at all. The movie feels as if it should have been PG-13 but the director really wanted some frontal nudity. The movie also has a political/social undertone to it, but doesn’t really impact the plot of the movie which makes it feel forced. There are a few jokes that make you laugh, a few characters that are funny, and a few plot lines that were good. Overall though, the positives are too few and leave this movie a shell of what it could have been.
