Brief Review
My Friend Dahmer is set during the teenage years of the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, before his killing spree. The focus is on the why and how he turned out to be the person he became. Truthfully, this movie just wasn’t nearly as interesting as I thought it would be. The story was pretty slow and there wasn’t too much that ever happened. It approached Dahmer from a more empathetic point of view and if you didn’t know what he turned out to be, you would feel sympathetic for him after this movie. The movie definitely shows that he always had something wrong in his head, but it focuses a lot on how his troubled family life significantly impacted him. It also shows his interesting relationship with his peers, including some “friends” that practically only use him for comedic value. The movie is creepy because you know what he eventually turned out to be, but no one could tell at that time that he was more than just an oddball. I am generally very interested in movies about criminals, but this one was pretty bland. Yes, it was creepy, but overall nothing really happened in it.
