Brief Review
Darkest Hour is an inspirational biopic detailing the first few weeks of Winston Churchill’s tenure as Prime Minister. Depicting Churchill’s struggles both internally and within the British government as he tries to rally a country that is beginning to believe the war is a lost cause. Relying entirely on dialogue and acting, this is not the typical WWII movie. The battles in this movie aren’t fought in fields with guns but rather in war rooms and parliament with words. Gary Oldman provides a stellar performance in his portrayal of Churchill. My only complaints would be length and the movie always maintained a lingering sense of optimism. While history allows us to know that he was ultimately successful, the movie isn’t as tense and as dark as one would expect as Britain is on the brink of total failure. Behind Oldman, Darkest Hour is an inspiring biopic of Winston Churchill that both history buffs and casual movie fans will enjoy.
