Brief Review
Dunkirk is based on the incredible true story of the Dunkirk evacuation during WWII. First a little expectation setting with this movie. It is not really a war movie. Yes it is about a military operation, but this is much more about the evacuation than the battle. If you go in thinking it will be an action packed war movie, you will be disappointed. I can see how a lot of people might say this movie is boring, but I think with the right expectations, you will enjoy it more.
With all that being said, this movie tells the story of the Dunkirk evacuation from three points of view: the soldiers on the ground, the pilots in the air, and the civilian navy at sea. The movie paints a very realistic and harrowing portrait of what everyone involved in the evacuation faced. It feels almost like a documentary. It is unique in that not a ton actually happens, but the realness of it definitely makes it better. Be warned that there is not much dialogue and much of the movie relies on visuals and music in order to tell the story. People who are really into cinematography will probably love it. Us regular people probably find it to be a fairly slow movie. Hopefully having the right expectations makes it better for you. On a side note, it works almost perfectly as a follow-up to Darkest Hour, which ends right before the evacuation.
