Brief Review
A female demi-god leaves her utopia home with the intent of saving Earth from evil. This is definitely DC’s best movie, but it still feels like a step below the typical Marvel superhero movie. What makes this movie special is that it is the first major female led superhero movie to be widely successful. Gal Gadot really does a great job playing Wonder Woman and she is single-handedly the best part of the movie. Unfortunately outside of it being a groundbreaking moment for the superhero genre, it ends up being a fairly standard superhero movie. That doesn’t mean that it was a bad movie, it was pretty good, but it is a little over-hyped in my opinion. There are some good action scenes and some humor, but it falls short of being a very good movie. My two biggest issues were that the plot was not very memorable and at times it felt kind of cheesy. It’s really a pretty standard superhero back story movie, with no new twists or unique features. And sure, Wonder Woman was raised in a utopia and has extremely naïve views, but they used it as their only source of humor. It just started to feel repetitive. Additionally, the special effects seemed cheesy and unrealistic in a few scenes. In today’s day and age, where most movies have incredible special effects, it really kind of lessened the quality of the whole movie for me. The good news is that is pretty nit-picky and most people probably won’t even notice the special effects. Overall this is a solid superhero movie that is worth watching, but it probably received better reviews than is truly warranted by the movie itself.
