Brief Review
A nerdy, rich hedge fund manager is sentenced to time in prison, so he enlists the help of a goody two shoes black man (who he assumes has been to jail) to prepare him for his time in jail. This movie can really be taken two totally separate ways. It pushes the boundaries and really plays up racial stereotypes in order to create humor, but it is done in a totally sarcastic and over-the-top way. It is supposed to be considered humorous, yet I can easily see how it would be perceived poorly. With that being said, this is a pretty typical Will Ferrell movie. He plays the nerdy and weak character that he plays well and a lot of the humor focuses around the irony provided by this. The combination of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart definitely provide a lot of laughs, but the movie isn’t overly memorable. There isn’t much in terms of a real plot line, so if you don’t find these two funny or won’t like the edgier nature of the jokes, it probably isn’t worth watching. If you enjoy that humor or like these two, the movie is a decent comedy that will keep you entertained. I really like both actors, so I thought the movie was fine. I won’t go out of my way to re-watch it though.
