Brief Review
Based on the novel Gone Girl, a husband reports his wife missing on their fifth anniversary. I really like this movie. My favorite part of Gone Girl is how dark and kind of twisted the movie is. I don’t mean that in a scary way, it is more of a psychological thriller. Neither of the main characters are particularly likable, but you also want to empathize with them for different reasons. Throughout the movie you only see just enough to start forming an opinion before there’s a twist. And there are a lot of twists. It can be almost frustrating as you keep changing your opinion back and forth. Sometimes you’re on one side and then later you’re on the opposite side and then you switch back. But at the same time, that is why this movie is good too! My two main complaints are that the movie is long and that I don’t like the ending. I think these two kind of play into each other. First, I think the plot is really good for like 80% of the movie, but then I don’t enjoy it as much. There are probably a few too many twists. Then, while the ending is fitting given the theme of the movie, I just don’t love it. Unfortunately, the ending keeps Gone Girl from being a truly great movie to me. Overall, this is a solid mystery/thriller movie with a dark tone to it that I have seen it multiple times and would watch it again. I recommend it.
